JOE OLIVER
In 1995, at the age of 15, I felt seen for the first time in my life.
A house sits adjacent to a small church; the living room has been transformed into a youth hall. Each week, teenagers come to learn about a 2,000-year-old teacher whose message has reverberated throughout the world. I met him that August day in 95. He saw me, forgave me, and welcomed me into his way of love, life, and hope.
I've been His apprentice ever since.
For the past 23 years, I’ve worked within faith communities, dedicated to teaching and making disciples. Like many, my story includes seasons of disappointment, betrayal, misunderstanding, and loss. But it’s also woven with adventures, laughter, children, incredible friends, and the greatest “ê-zer” (Helper) my King and friend could ever bless me with.
It's not been an easy life so far, but it has been good.
Good.
It's a word we see seven times in the opening chapter of the most influential book ever. The word good in the Hebrew Bible is ṭō·wḇ (pronounced TOV.), and it has shaped the way I live my life to this day. Like a motto or purpose statement, a mantra to live by.
It's a call to action that hangs prominently in my kitchen. Aligning me, calling to me, reminding me every day.
Bring TOV (Good)...
...and of course, we can't forget the cookies. (That part my daughter added.)
